It lasts for five days and draws crowds to parties and balls as well as to the Pao Cultural Grande Othelo which is the annual Carnaval Parade. This event is a fine example of exhilaration, luxury, color, beautiful women and lots of vibrant samba. Even though the Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro is larger, the festivities in Sao Paulo are certainly a fun time and the atmosphere in the city is lively during this period. One of the best ways to tour São Paulo is by using the underground subway system. This way you can avoid the chaotic traffic, and get around on what is considered a very safe means of public transport. The subway also links up all the main tourist spots of the city

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL Rio was named -- or misnamed -- by the crew of a Portuguese ship that arrived in what is now the city on January 1, 1502. Thinking they had found the mouth of a river, instead of the bay that became known as the Baía de Guanabara (Guanabara Bay), they dubbed the spot Rio de Janeiro (January River). Sixty-five years later, on the feast of St. Sebastian, the city was founded with the official name of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.
